People who suffer chronically from cold sores know how miserable they can be. Not only are they uncomfortable, but they also look unsightly, and they seem to always show up when something special is happening. If you have this problem, there are some steps you can take to avoid getting them in the first place, such as using skin protectants any time you are in the sun, getting plenty of rest, proper hygiene, and refraining from using other people’s glasses, towels, water bottles, etc. In the case that you still can’t seem to keep them from coming, there are methods of treating them in order to promote cold sore removal.

When you do have a cold sore, there are things you should avoid doing that will just make the situation worse

* Never try to pinch, bite, or pick at the blisters.

* Rinse your mouth with salt water which will make the sore feel better

* If there’s any yellow pus around the sore, use an antibiotic ointment on it

* Apply lipstick or lip balm using your finger instead of the applicator

* Use a moisturizer

* Keep hands away from sores, and wash your hands often

Of course, if you have cold sores, you’re going to want to try every trick in order to get rid of them quickly. Most basically, you can use ibuprofen or acetaminophen to reduce pain and swelling. In addition to these common medications, you can also find other over the counter drugs that may be effective. These include skin protectants and lip balms that keep the sore moist and provide a barrier from other irritants. These are products that contain white petroleum jelly (Vaseline), glycerin, cocoa butter, dimenthicone, and allantoin or topical analgesics that will give you local pain relief and help reduce itching. These include benzocaine, lidocaine, benzyl alcohol, phenol, menthol, and camphor.

As a final resort you may want to seek assistance from your doctor. He will be able to prescribe stronger medications to help control symptoms that result in cold sore removal. Some of these medications are:

* Denavir – cream which penetrates the area to block the virus that causes cold sores.

* Acyclovir/Zovirax – ointment with reduces cold sore intensity, healing times, and other symptoms.

* Famciclovir – reduces cold sore pain, duration, and healing time.

* Valtrex – may prevent cold sore outbreak if taken prior to eruption. Reduces healing time, pain, and duration of sores.

Having the cold sore virus is manageable, even if it is inconvenient. Taking the proper steps to avoid and treat outbreaks so as to promote fast cold sore removal can make a world of difference in how severely you are affected by this disease.
