Unusual Art Dolls

Built by Di McDonald on Saturday, July 8th, 2006

Can you imagine going into the $2 store or similar and buying small porcelain dolls to dearm and deleg them and rip the clothes off?

Yes this is exactly what I had fun doing in USA when I was there. Do you know those small dolls with oldfashioned bonnets and yukky nylon lace on the frocks?

It was such fun ripping the bonnets and wigs off them then cutting the strings that hold the arms and legs on. After this I was left with a naked torso. We call this deconstruction and then what we do is reconstruct them into something altogether different. What a way to be creative!

Actually its really fun. I used a cardboard base and wrapped painted Tyvek around the doll waist, I then glued it all in place and walaa the doll had a stand and was now a stump doll. I painted the top of the body red …….and made a nice neckline. As the stump part was black I decided on a red white and black theme. I cut a small sqaure of black and white check fabric and glued that on the upper front of the doll then printed off the word ” CREATE” to glue on front of that.

I wrapped and back and white printed fabric around her head for a turban, then repainted her face with metallic paints. What a difference and what a fun day.

If you would like to do something similar and cant find the porcelain dolls then check out the plastic Barbie style ones in the cheap shops. They can be deconstructed the same way. Heres a website where you can get an idea of what one amazing artist does with these dolls.
