Urine Leakage With Menopause

Built by Sandra Kim Leong on Wednesday, January 16th, 2008

One of the symptoms that you can experience during menopause is urine leakage. Urine leakage usually happens when you laugh, cough or sneeze. It is very similar to the days when you were pregnant and had the same problem. You may feel embarrassed by it and would prefer not to deal with it. However, there are some things that you can do to reduce the problem of urine leakage.

First, let us understand why this problem surfaced. When you are going through menopause your estrogen levels are very low. This can cause many changes in your body. One of the changes is that the muscles around your bladder weaken. These muscles are responsible for holding the urine in your bladder until you reach the bathroom. However, when the muscles are weak, any reaction can cause you to discharge the urine stored in the bladder. A sneeze due to a whiff of perfume or simply laughing out loud at a joke can cause it to be released unexpectedly. You certainly have not been thinking about going to the bathroom at that point in time; so it is not as if you leaked while rushing there.

A remedy for embarrassing stains is to wear a light panty liner. This can be extremely helpful especially if you are out of the house and you have an emergency. Also, bring along extra ones to change to, if you are going to be out for a number of hours.

Kegel exercises are known to be helpful for reducing the problem of urine leakage. This exercise regime strengthens the muscles around the bladder. You may have also done these during pregnancy as well. To do a Kegel, you will need to contract your pelvic muscles. Tighten the muscles by acting as if you are trying to stop your urine midstream. It may be a little difficult at first, but once you get used to them, you will be more comfortable doing them. When you have tightened the muscles, hold them for a count of three and then relax. Repeat this until you get up to 45 done a day.

Estrogen replacement therapy is something that can help with the urine leakage during menopause. There are other drugs as well that are specifically for this type of problem. Your doctor will be able to tell you if you are a candidate for these medications. It is of course, best if you can avoid the use of drugs or any invasive form of medicine. These tend to produce other forms of side effects.

You may find that you have plenty to contend with as you go through menopause. Try to take it in your stride that it is all part of a natural process. You may also find to your surprise, that many of your girlfriends are also experiencing the same symptoms. Form support networks and learn to relax. You should also be fine, if you stick to a healthy diet and regular exercise program.
