Vaccination At Birth : Step for Newborn Immunity

Built by Teresita C. Tayanes on Thursday, August 24th, 2006

Infants are known to be susceptible to infections in the first two months of life. Doctors have long recognized, that the immune system is born immature and needs time to finish development. That is why immunizations against measles and other diseases are given after two months of age or in a spaced-out series of injections.

A team of researchers at Children’s Hospital Boston has found that among 10 kinds of immune receptor molecules, one receptor called TLR-8, can be activated earlier in life than expected. If doctors can stimulate that receptor, newborns may get an extra measure of protection through vaccination at birth.

TLR-8, the special receptor molecule, until now, has long been thought to be almost inactive during the first few months of life, but with this discovery, it could be used to enhance immune responses in newborns.

Dr. Ofer Levy, an infectious disease specialist at Children’s, the lead author of this study and a faculty member at the Harvard Medical School said, “we plan to test this approach in animals and eventually in human babies.”

Hi I am John and I was just reading your article about trying to stimulate this TLR-8 special receptor for newborn to enhance immune response. In my country we give vaccine at birth BCG OPV and HeB .How does this vaccine work if the new born immune system is not fully matured and there is also maternal antibodies present. Are we already doing that or not? 555-555-1212
