What are Colon Cancer Early Symptoms?

Built by Sandra Kim Leong on Monday, July 24th, 2006

Cancer in most cases, if detected early, can help save your life. Hence it pays to be alert to the symptoms that your body is showing. Because cancer can occur in both the colon and rectum, cancer statistics usually group colon and rectal cancer together. Thus, this type of cancer is more accurately referred to as colorectal cancer. However, for the purpose of this article, as in most other places, the term colon cancer is used for simplicity reasons.

One of the important colon cancer early symptoms is rectal bleeding. But unfortunately, most people mistakenly consider the bleeding as hemorrhoids and avoid consulting a doctor.

Bowel movements can result in bleeding. Even then, there may not be any major discharge of blood and bleeding will be occasional. Dried blood in the stool indicates tumor in colon and normal blood is an indication of tumor in rectum. Blood in the stool can also be due to several other reasons. Constant loss of blood can lead to anemia. Instead of becoming a self-appointed doctor, it is better to have a proper screening done.

Most of the colon cancer early symptoms may go unnoticed as they do not cause severe discomfort or might be considered as other ailments. Narrow stools, for a prolonged period of time, are an indication of some sort of growth in the colon or rectum. The narrowing results as the waste material tries to navigate through the tumor. When there is a growth happening in the colon, it will be reflected in your bowel movement. The cancerous growth hampers the smooth movement of the bowels. This can result in constipation. In a prolonged situation of constipation, you should consult a doctor. Bloating and cramping resulting from constipation are the other symptoms.

Another colon cancer early symptom is nausea and vomiting without any reason. In fact, obstruction caused by tumor can trigger periodic episodes of nausea and vomiting. Flatulence and other disorders caused by gas can be due to the obstruction created by the cancerous growth. A tumor in the rectum causes a feeling of unfinished defecation. Persistent occurrence of such a feeling indicates the presence of a tumor which is mistaken by the body as stool.

Apart from the symptoms related to bowel movement, yet another early symptom of colon cancer is weight loss, which is not attributed to any particular reason like diet or exercise. Such a weight loss is a clear sign that the body is undergoing some serious changes. The tumor might be hampering with the colon’s capacity to absorb moisture from food residues. Weight loss will be followed by fatigue and constant tiredness. Most people are likely to ignore these colon cancer early symptoms as natural occurrences associated with the tough modern daily routine.

Colon cancer early symptoms are likely to be ignored by most of the people. When there is a constant disturbance in bowel movement, it is wise to seek the advice of a doctor. Those with family history of colon cancer and people above the age of 50 should get colon examination done periodically.

Hi I have been anemic for over a year now and because I'm a lady of a certain age it was felt it was a gynae issue. I had all that sorted out but I'm still anaemic. I have changes in my bowel movements, fecal occult blood came back positive, I have tremendous wind (anyone got a kite?) - intermittent pain in the gut and the doctor has referred me for a sigmoidoscopy and a gastroscopy. I am also so bloated and feel nauseous some of the time. Like some of you on this forum I am not looking forward to the tests but i know it's important to rule things out. I urge people here to please take any test offered to you - bowel cancer is curable if caught early and your life is more important than any embarrasement or temporary feelings of being uncomfortable.

I have been dealing with Crohns since 1996 and was recently advised after many test that i have colon cancer. I hardly had any pain, but did have many of the other symptoms that suggested cancer. I would always suggest that if you notice something out of the norm to see a Doc ASAP.

I have had pain in my lower right abdomen for over 1 year now about 1 year and 3months to be exact. I have had blood on my stool for 3 years. The doctor felt that it was NOT cancer due to the fact that over 3 years of blood and over 1 year of pain would have spred to other parts of my body by now. He tried to get me to a colonoskipy sorry bad spelling. But i cant take the prep it makes me sick and i cant get it past my stomic. So i cant have that done to clean myself out. What do you guys feel here. Do you think it is something serious or should i assume that since its been over a year and the pain is still here that its just some other funky thing going on in my body.. Suggestions are always welcome! What can i do without the MOVIPREP can i just eat or drink prune juice? HELP!

    • lollylegs says:

hiya there. dont be silly, get this done, i am the same as you, with the moviprep, picolax drink, that is nothing compared to what you have have to put up with if they diagnoise something, i am the worlds worse at drinking this, the worst thing for me was the say before the proceedure, no food, just water/juice, that was hard, now go on and drink it, its worth it, then you will thank me, the proceedure is nothing, you get a sedative and in dreamland, your on the clock no go girl!!!

    • Concerned says:

PLEASE get the colonoscopy. I had blood in my stools for three years. I finally had the colonoscopy and they found a large PRE-cancerous polyp which was removed. Drink the prep....this is you LIFE that is at stake.

I have problems going. Stool comes out bound up. Recently having trouble going, and feels like it all won't come out. For Heather: You need to go see a doctor asap. If I had those problems I'd be at the dr's office tomorow.

  7. Heather says:

HI, I had a baby about a year ago and about 8-10 months ago i started getting sick. My doctor tries to make appointments for me to see a specialist but they either make appointments with the wrong building or they can only make an apointment in that office once a month. I am really starting to get worried and reading this makes me feel worse. My grandfather died of colon cancer when i was little and im afraid i have it too. Every once in a while i have a small amount of blood on the tissue when i wipe, Constipation, stools are a yellowish/orangish/brown, When i go to the bathroom its not alot and it feels like its hard yet when i wipe it looks soft and I feel like I still have to go. I have stomach and back pain which have been increasing, and alot of flatuence which is unusual for me, I have constant nausea and sometimes without warning will vomit or have extreme diahreah. and I'm always completely tired like I have no energy what-so-ever and it becomes hard to move my body. Im really worried and I was wondering if I have a reason to be?!

Hi, i have always had problems using the restroom. For the past 8 wks, i have to depend on constipation medications in order to use the restroom. I've also lost weight. I have lost 2 pant sizes and is experiencing tiredness along with pain in my lower back (right above my tail bone)and lower stomach. I have a Great Aunt who died from colon cancer 4 yrs ago and and her mother died with bone marrow cancer in 1998. I am truly worried. Am i experiencing problems that are related to colon cancer?
