What is a true vegan?

Built by Sherrie Le Masurier on Thursday, October 11th, 2007

A true vegan is a person who doesn’t consume or use any animal products. While it is often impractical in today’s world to be 100% animal free all the time most vegans try to aim as close to ideal as possible. Basically it’s all about being true to your beliefs.

Being vegan takes more time, energy and creativity than being a vegetarian does. Vegetarians simply omit the meat and then all is good.

Dairy, eggs and meat, and what a true vegan eats instead:

Instead of cow’s milk, vegans will consume dairy substitutes like soy, rice or barley milk.

Instead of eggs, vegans opt for tofu.

As for meat, nothing that used to be an animal (that includes fish) is ever eaten.

Many vegans consume only organic produce. The reason for this is that the food tastes better and is often more nutritious, it also protects the environment and supports local farmers.

Vegan versions of food traditionally made with animal products are also ideal for anyone who suffers from food allergies.

Following are some more great substitution ideas:

Eggs

Flax eggs – 1/3 cup whole flax seed

1 cup water

Psyllium husks – 1 tbsp psyllium husks

2 tbsp water

Milk

1 cup cooked oatmeal

2 cups water

1 tsp vanilla extract

Almond milk – ½ cup raw almonds

2 cups water

2 dates, pitted

Butter

2 tbsp flax oil

Salt

Dash of turmeric

Other butter substitutes include soy lecithin spread, vegetable shortening for making pastry, nut butters, or applesauce for baking.
