Where Can I Learn Magic Tricks?

Built by Alex Tsui on Tuesday, October 11th, 2005

Okay, so you have decided to take up magic as a hobby or perhaps make it your life-long career. Where can you learn how to perform magic tricks? After all, you can’t actually walk up to a magician and ask him to teach you his tricks. He’ll give you the famous line: “A good magician always keeps his secrets”. So where do you start? It’s actually quite simple…

Although all magicians have to abide by the magician’s code of honor and keep their secrets well, there are still plenty of resources to guide the beginning magician into the art of magic. Some of them are free and you need to fork out a bit of money for the others. If you are just starting out, I would advise you to stick to the free resources first. Without enough knowledge and experience, you can easily end up buying a lot of props and stuff which might not be suitable for you.

Free Magic Trick Resources

If you want to learn free magic tricks, just pay a visit to your local library. In fact, that was how I started on my exciting journey of magic. You can usually find books on magic tricks just beside the card games and hobbies section.

Glance through the books and try to pick those that are not too difficult for you. You will learn faster and enjoy yourself more by starting with the easy tricks first and then working your way up to the more advanced tricks.

Another good place to learn free magic tricks is by doing a search on the internet for “free magic tricks”. You’ll find some nice sites but you have to do some research and digging. An excellent site which I highly recommend is AllMagic.com. It is updated weekly and the tricks are explained clearly with lots of photos. The tricks here are for the more advanced magician. If you can’t master them at first, just take a break and go back to them when your skills are better.

You don’t need any expensive prop when you are just a beginner. A lot of tricks can be done with ordinary things found around your house like paper, dollar bills, coins, paper cups, and so on.

Paid Magic Trick Resources

For kids or teenagers, the best resource would be the magic kits that are sold in most toy stores. They usually come in a package of fifty to even more than a hundred tricks. All of them are easy to learn and perform. The props are usually well-made and attractive too. If you are a parent, this would be the perfect gift for your kid if he or she shows interest in magic. I’ll share with you some tips on how to buy magic kits for your kids in another post.

If you live in a place where there is a local magic club or association, that would be the best magic resource you could ever find. Try looking them up in your Yellow Pages directory under “Magic Clubs”. You may need to pay a fee in order to be a member but the personal help, teaching and encouragement from your fellow magicians would be priceless.

When you have developed your skills and knowledge to the point where you want to put on a bigger and more professional show, you can drop by a magic store and buy some magic props. If it is your first time buying something, it would be better if you asked an experienced magician to help you out. There is a huge variety of tricks with funny-sounding names and it can be quite overwhelming.

My advice to you is to get a good magic book or DVD that teaches many tricks rather than spending the same amount of money just to get one expensive trick by itself. In this way, you will get more value for your money.

Well, I hope you find this useful and helpful. Until next time, practise hard and remember, never… never… reveal your secrets.
