Built by Teresita C. Tayanes on Friday, February 5th, 2010

Wine is one of the oldest medicines in the world. The medicinal value of grapes and wine were known since ancient times. Roman soldiers and Egyptian warriors used to pour wine into their wounds and mix wine in their water. Today, scientists are finding that red wines have antibacterial and antiviral properties, a mild tranquilizing effect, and aid digestion

Wine contains nutrients, wrote Dr. Ronald Thayer in his book Avoid Premature Aging. Wine contains traces of vitamins B, iron and all of the mineral elements necessary for the maintenance of human life. According to Dr. Thayer, wine possesses the following ingredients : ethanol, aldehydes, acids, esters, fructose, glucose, polyphenols, thiamine, riboflavin, pyridoxine, pantothenic acid, nicotinic acid, and traces of ammonia and amino acids. The pH of wine is close to the human gastric juice and is easily assimilated.

Red and dry wine, in small amounts are beneficial for the arteries, according to Dr. Thayer. It has a dilating effect upon the blood vessels. Wine relieves tensions and may help palliate high blood pressure. For tranquilizing effect, take no more than  ounces of wine with the evening meal especially at bedtime. Wine should not be used if you have an active ulcer or an uncontrollable drinking problem, the good doctor cautioned.
