Managing your diabetes properly is one of the key factors to staying alive and out of the hospital. A recent study shows that 81% of people with diabetes that do not manage it properly are more likely to die than diabetic people that do manage their diabetes properly.

Importance of Managing Diabetes

Dr. P. Michael Ho at the Denver VA Medical Center along with his colleagues recently conducted research on 11,532 diabetic patients to discover how many people were managing their diabetes properly and what the possible long term issues would be with those that weren’t managing their diabetes properly.

The research results indicate that nearly 21%, or almost 2,422 people with diabetes were not taking any blood glucose lowering, blood pressure lowering or cholesterol lowering pills to manage their diabetes. Of these 2,422 people, they had 58% higher odds of being hospitalized for illness and 81% higher odds of dying than those that were properly managing their diabetes with medications.

The 2,422 people also had higher blood pressure, higher cholesterol levels and higher blood sugar levels than the rest of the patients.

Factored into the research is the fact that most people that do manage their diabetes will more likely practice healthy behaviors such as eating right and getting exercise.

What the research did not mention is why these 2,422 people were not managing their diabetes. It very well could be that these people may not have health insurance and simply cannot afford to take medications.
