Your Acid Reflux Diet Should Not Include These 5 Foods

Acid reflux and indigestion are more often than not caused by your diet. As such, making some changes to your diet and cutting out some foods that are known to cause irritation and pain can help to relieve your acid reflux symptoms greatly. In fact, you should draw up a special acid reflux diet to reduce the severity and frequency of your acid reflux symptoms. To come up with this acid reflux diet, you will need to find out exactly which foods are considered safe.

Everybody’s acid reflux diet will be different as everyone is sensitive to different foods. However you are well advised not to eat the following 5 items because of their adverse effect on the stomach acid and your oesophagus.



1. You should avoid including convenience foods in your acid reflux diet. These include fast foods, take-away food, greasy and stodgy foods and also spicy foods. Unfortunately, they are the main culprits for stimulating the production of stomach acid. Thus you should remove these items from your acid reflux diet. Unfortunately many of us eat this kind of food on a regular basis as we do not have the time to prepare our own meals and if we want our meals to be prepared quick.

Occasionally fast food restaurants will offer a grilled alternative to the normal greasy fried burger. This will be considered a better alternative for your acid reflux diet; hence, it is still possible for you to go out and have a meal with your friends.

2. There are certain fruits and vegetables that cause severe symptoms in some people because of the acid content in the foods. Potatoes, onions and the citrus fruits are best excluded from your acid reflux diet, as should tomatoes and cranberries.

3. Alcohol should definitely not be part of your acid reflux diet. Some rich varieties of tea and coffee should also be excluded. The occasional glass of wine may be tolerated however this will change from person to person and so experimentation is again needed.

4. Your acid reflux diet should have as little dairy products as possible. These items are known to upset the stomach and cause acid reflux. The superstition that drinking milk can settle the stomach may work for some however those on an acid reflux diet need to check that they can tolerate milk and other dairy products before they indulge in them completely.

5. Chocolate should also be off the menu for your acid reflux diet. It is one of the worst culprits for triggering acid reflux. Desserts that have dairy products as ingredients are therefore best avoided.

You may feel upset initially at the thought of having to give up several of your favourite foods. However, the benefits of not developing acid reflux symptoms are well worth it. Keeping a diary of what foods are safe and what are not helps in planning for the best acid reflux diet for yourself.
